Nathaniel Fisher, o patriarca da família, morre em um acidente de carro na véspera de natal. Na mesma noite, Nate, o filho mais velho, está voltando para casa. Além de precisar encarar a morte do pai, Nate terá que aprender a lidar com uma mãe submissa, um irmão mais novo que sempre trabalhou ao lado do pai e sua irmã caçula, uma adolescente em fase de rebeldia.
Para complicar o dia – a- dia da família Fisher, Ruth Fisher, a matriarca, esconde um affair extraconjugal. Dave, o irmão do meio, é gay mas não assumiu para a família e Claire, a caçulinha, usa drogas quando está com seu namorado.
O único lado bom da vida de Nate, neste delicado momento, é Brenda, uma mulher passional que ele conheceu no avião. O que ele não sabia era que a família de Brenda era tão complicada como a dele.
Com a morte do Pai, Nate é obrigado a voltar para sua cidade natal, assumir a empresa funerária Fisher & Filhos ao lado de seu irmão e começar uma nova vida.
